That’s why it appears to speak to you even though the author
may not know you. One of my friends, Derrick Williams made mention that poetry is for the free thinker, not the concrete mind. Its meant to be shared and not harbored, therefore when reading enjoy and don’t become a character or fixture within the words…have i seen myself in a poem maybe, maybe not. I’m sure …the author wasn’t writing about me, but writing to me…see she’s been dead 50 years, yet her words were so powerful how could she not be speaking to me?!? I will beg to agree with him. Poetry is the snapshot in your life while prose serves as the story line. So where prose may become something unique to your own situation, poetry becomes repetitive since it catches such an infinitesimal period of time and it may apply to several people simultaneously and also years after it was given purpose.
